1. Smashing of Bone China Plates in Denmark:
Imagine a heap of broken bone china dishes that you discover on the first day of the New year 2023. Sounds silly, but people in Denmark believe that the size of the heap of broken plates on the door is directly proportional to luck and prosperity. People on 31st December Eve smash plates on their friends’ and neighbors’ front doors. This ritual also symbolizes the release of any anger and aggression that the parties had for each other in the past year.
2. Smashing Pomegranates in Greece:
According to ancient Greek philosophy, pomegranate is a fruit that relates to life and fertility. In modern Greece, it is associated with good fortune and luck. People in Greece believe in smashing a pomegranate on their main door on new year’s eve. The scattered seeds are directly correlated with good luck to come in the new year.
3. Chile- Where Normal and Paranormal World Intersects
In Chile, it’s not the church, it’s the cemetery that shouts on 31st December eve. People in Chile believe to include their deceased family members in the new year festivities. They visit the cemetery on the 31st night and celebrate new year’s eve in the graveyard with their loved ones who are now a part of the paranormal world.
4. Russia- Drinking Ashes will Fulfil your Wishes
It’s not any human ashes or anything of such type. Russians on the 31st of December eve, write their wishes on a piece of paper and burn it with a lighter. The ashes produced are then mixed in a glass of champagne. It doesn’t sound like any exotic drink, but it is believed that consuming your wishes will bring immense opportunity to make your wishes come true. After Christmas wishes, It’s time to get involved in celebrating the essence of the new year.
5. Italy- Throwing furniture out of the window
Do not worry! These are not heavy furniture. These are soft items that Italians have no use for and want to discard from their homes. They collect all such furniture and throw them on the 31st eve. Everything that no longer gives them satisfaction or joyous feeling is chucked out. It is a sign of a fresh start in a fresh new year.
6. Estonia: Eating Many Meals
If food and drinks fascinate you, then it’s Estonia where you’ll love to celebrate new year’s eve. People in Estonia believe that eating seven, nine, or twelve meals is a sign of prosperity and good luck. Do not worry if you cannot finish your meal, leave it on your plate. It is believed that the left foot is for the other family members for the ones who are in the spirit form.
7. Armenia- Time to Bake the Lucky Bread:
The pieces of bread baked on the 31st eve are special for the people of Armenia. It is a belief that each dough kneaded for baking the bread has a special component called “Luck”. Though not a physical ingredient, it is a strong belief that these freshly baked pieces of bread bring luck and fortune in the coming year. Good wishes and thoughts are kneaded and baked for every member who loves bread or any combo dishes made with bread.
