Every industry has occupational standards to operate on its projects. Especially if a construction company is concerned, the recruitment of professionals, engineers, or apprentice is an ongoing activity. However, post selection, every candidate has to undergo a training and assessment procedure. It makes them competent individuals to manage and operate the construction equipment on site.
When operating a high capacity telehandler, the operator requires training and excellence to grab the actual functioning and mechanism of how it works. The employer must conduct assessment sessions at regular time intervals to carry out the tasks they are required to undertake. It applies equally to every person and experienced worker who has been recruited.
Types of Assessment Required for Operating a High Capacity Telehandler:
Assessment is the application of learned skills in the workplace. It should be carried out by occupationally competent and authorized assessors. There are two different types of assessment that every person has to undergo before fieldwork. These assessments are theoretical and practical. For experienced personnel, only practical assessment is mandatory. It should contain both practical elements to demonstrate the skills and standards achieved and the answering of questions to demonstrate relevant knowledge of the skill you have.
Role of Employers During the Assessment:
The role of the employer is crucial in the assessment task especially when operating a high capacity telehandler is in question. Some of their significant roles are listed below:
Candidate should not use Telehandlers at Full Potential:
In the initial stages, the candidates are not allowed to use the high capacity telehandler at its fullest. They do not operate the machine completely on the site particularly in terms of lifting and placing heavy loads. Moreover, it should be done under the supervision of experts (assessor) or the site supervisor where the assessment is going on. Most assessment training only specifies activities of up to 75% of the full operating height.
Wait for the Newly Trained Operator to be an Expert:
The assessment program is carried out to make the operator, an expert in handling construction equipment and load lifting. Consequently, employers should ensure that newly trained operators are limited to construction activities on the working areas within the training program until they become confident in operating to the parameters experienced within training. Appropriate supervision must be applied to ensure that they carry all the tasks safely with precision.
Few Mandatory rules for newly qualified operators, employers, and supervisors:
- During the practical training and assessment procedure, there are certain regulations for both the supervisors and the newly qualified operators:
- Specify any particular work requirements to nominated training providers before the commencement of training.
- Establish the type and the content of training or assessment programs undertaken by the operator.
- Identify differences in learnt skills and the work site utilizing training body learning outcomes and/or training material.
- In the initial stage, the employer should limit the operator to activities in working areas encountered within the training program.
- The operator should give consistent time to the new operator to study the machine’s operating manual handbook and other relatable data.
- Provide time and facilities for the operator to practice with the new machine type.
- Monitoring of work undertaken to test and ensure operator confidence and ability to handle telehandlers and other construction equipment.
- Introduction of new activities in the working areas under the supervision of site managers, especially if lifting loads to heights higher than previously encountered. Also, the new operator must be gradually trained on how to handle or work within busy areas with safety.
- To carry out periodic assessments and ascertain on high-risk activities and how can it be undertaken safely.
- The operators should be provided with specific additional training for activities like lifting operations using several types of attachment.
