However, handling them on a construction site or in a warehouse is a result of rigorous training. Any employee has to undergo training for years to handle these machines perfectly. However, there are several myths related to their training programs and employment. Dieci Ontario lists five forklift training myths attached to their profession and their reality.
You Need a Valid License:
No! There is no requirement for a license to operate forklifts. The only legal requirement is to get the basic and advanced level training to get into the job. Moreover, entry as an operator after training is not that easy. The employer conducts further training programs and the operators have to work under expert supervision for some duration before fieldwork. The operators should have the training certificate as evidence of training completion.
An Experienced Operator with no qualification:
One of the myths attached with the experienced non- qualifying operator is whether they are qualified for the job or not. Yes! Experience counts for such untrained operators and they are given chance. They need to assess their ability first to align them with existing operators or a level beyond that.
Operators have to go through refresher training legally every three years:
No operators are not legally bound to get a refresher training course every three years. But operators should update themselves with the latest technical skills. Apart from blindly following the guidelines to complete refresher training; such pieces of training should be conducted frequently along with practical exposure to make operators more skilled.
Experienced Forklift Operators do not need Expert Supervision:
Wrong! Operators with years of experience can handle their job perfectly. But expert supervision is always needed to ensure fewer incidents and improve efficiency.
Operators do not need training on load-lifting beyond the capacity of the machine:
Wrong! Even if the operator is experienced on the equipment with a certain load capacity, the operator is not allowed to increase the load beyond the machine’s capacity. It can cause a severe accident. Unless authorized by the manufacturer of the high capacity telehandler or other equipment, increasing load capacity is dangerous.
