What Don’ts You Should follow while Dealing with a High Capacity Telehandler?

It is easy for any trained operators to drive and handle huge construction vehicles as it is their daily job. Every construction site has numerous machines and each of them has different functionalities. However, there are a set of rules and instructions to follow while operating these machines.  Several protocols are defined to abide by the operators of a high capacity telehandler to keep the site and life of workers/pedestrians safe. If you visit a large construction site or any site related to public infrastructure like highways, airports, etc, you will see a large number of machines being operated at a time. There is a set of do and don’ts of operating a machine. Here are some don’ts that you must know before handling a high capacity telehandler.

Do Not Operate a High-Capacity Telehandler unless you are trained:

Proper training and rich experience are required for the operators to handle a telehandler. Moreover, the operator has to work under the supervision of experts even during their onsite work. Training makes the operator efficient, competent, and authorized to use construction-related machines. Also, one should be aware of forklift training myths that do not affect during and after the training program of the operator.

Use Equipment you know is not working properly:

The use of any wrong or inefficient equipment can land the entire process in trouble. The only solution is to remove such equipment from the site or send it to the manufacturer for repair and maintenance. Whether it is any faulty part of a machine or any minute piece of non-functioning equipment, it should not be used unless tested and allowed by the supervisors on the site.

Operate controls from outside the cab:

Most of the high capacity telehandlers are designed for the operators to control every operation inside the cab with seat belts. Unless the telehandler is designed for such purposes, one should not try to control operation outside the cab.

Start or Stop Suddenly:

A sudden jerk or break is not recommended anytime during moving. It affects the efficiency of the machine and puts pedestrians’ life in danger. Drive safely. Do not make any abrupt and quick turns.

Travel on Uneven Ground:

The operator should only use the high capacity telehandler on even surfaces unless the vehicle specification allows. However, most telehandlers work on uneven surfaces safely and with 100% efficiency. But it is the prime duty of the operator to check the slope or surface of the construction site.

Use of Uncertified Attachments:

Attachments used in a telehandler are certified by the company. The attachments are manufactured based on the specific models of a telehandler. By using an unauthorized attachment, you’re inviting dangers like fall accidents on the site.

Lift load with attachments, unless trained:

You must be trained for lifting loads via telehandlers. If the operator is not well-trained, he can wrongly lift the load to diverted and wrong angles which can cause fatal fall accidents. Moreover, operating a telehandler with a suspended load is dangerous and needs skilled operators to manage.
